Caregiver Vacation – Respite Care The Gift of Time

Respite Care

Many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain in the comfort of their own home; the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some external support systems in place, such as Respite Care.

It is important for people to realize that caring for a loved one does not mean YOUR life stops. It simply means that your time management skills and daily routines needs a little TLC, to help you meet the needs of your loved one and to continue living your own life. Our DHS Personal Support Workers (P.S.W.) & companionship services can help you with Respite Care. We are here for caregivers, to support you and to lend a helping hand when needed. Everyone deserves a break now and then, including you.

You don’t have to do this alone.

DHS Respite Care offers short-term, temporary care services to individuals who need assistance with daily living and overnight care. This allows your family caregiver the opportunity to take a break from their daily routine, and the  challenges and stress of caring for an aging parent. Respite Care is often referred to as the gift of time. DHS Respite Care services can also involve overnight care when needed. Our services are available any time and for however long you need them. A few hours a day, or a week here or there, gives the caregiver some much needed time off; to take a break, exercise, conduct personal business or even to visit with friends.

At DHS Health Service, we are proud to offer experienced compassionate home support staff and nurses to provide Respite Care services in Durham Region. It is easy to get started, just give our office a call. DHS Healthcare Service staff will answer any of your questions and schedule an appointment for a free in-home consultation. Our staff will work with you to coordinate schedules with your primary caregiver.

While respite care may require some financial outlay, it is important to consider all options when supporting the mental health and stability of your  caregiver. Even using just a couple of the DHS in-home services (such as light housekeeping, errands or shopping) can help lessen the burden of the daily stress.
