TOP 10 REASONS TO HAVE REGULAR DENTAL HYGIENE
- Your teeth are important to your overall health. According to the Surgeon General “Oral Health is integral to general health”. You cannot be healthy without oral health. Your teeth are important for speaking, eating, breathing, swallowing and appearance.
- Oral Diseases are preventable. With oral hygiene gum disease, tooth loss and Periodontal Disease are preventable.
- Poor Dental hygiene can make you really sick! The oral cavity can be a portal of entry for microbial infections that affect the whole body. Oral diseases give rise to pathogens, which can be blood borne or aspirated into the lungs bringing about severe, even life-threatening consequences. There have been associations between chronic oral infections and diabetes, stroke, heart and lung disease.
- More of us keep our own teeth now and we need more dental hygiene care to keep our teeth! Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque attacking the bone that supports the teeth; the bone is lost and the end result is tooth loss. The best treatment of this disease is regular dental hygiene cleaning to remove the bacterial plaque.
- We get more cavities, as we get older! As we age we are more susceptible to cavities due to inadequate oral hygiene, infrequent dental cleaning, frequent snacking and removable partial dentures. Fluoride treatments are required more frequently to prevent cavities as we age.
- 3200 new Cases of Oral Cancer occur in Canada each year and have a 50 % survival rate. The majority of people diagnosed with oral cancer are 45 years and older. Oral cancer accounts for approximately 3 % of all cancers. The rate of survival is so low because it is not detected in its early stages. Dental Hygiene is important to screen for cancer.
- You still need dental care if you have Dentures! It is thought that when a patient has dentures they are no longer required to see a dentist, however patients who have dentures still require dental care. Many denture wearers have chronic infections related to ill-fitting dentures. Many denture wearers may also be smokers and they should have routine oral cancer checks.
- Aging changes and Medications can cause dry mouth, which increases the risk of dental cavities. Saliva is required as a natural defence against Dental Caries (early cavities) and Periodontal Disease. Regular Dental Hygiene helps prevent cavities.
- You can now get Dental Hygiene in the convenience of your own home. Recent changes have allowed Dental Hygienists to practice independently of Dentists allowing them to bring service to you. DHS also provides services in Retirement Homes, Nursing Homes and hospitals. We come to you.
- DHS provides Dental Hygiene for half the cost of going to the Dentist office. This offers you convenience of service in your own home without the cost of having to pay the overhead of a full Dental office.
